Senior Post-Doctoral Fellow. Research Laboratory of
Electronics –RELATE
(Research in Learning, Assessing, and Tutoring Effectively)
RELATE Group is directed by Prof. David Pritchard, who, having mentored
four Nobel prize winners, is known as one of the world’s leading mentors. I
collaborated with him on CyberTutor, a sophisticated interactive Web-based tutor
designed to improve learning experience for teachers and students. I was
responsible for research in education and instructional technology based on
statistical analysis as well as ways to improve and measure the impact of the
CyberTutor in education effectiveness. My work also included:
• Co-responsible for some facets of research including proposal
writing, funding, research design, management, execution, statistical analysis
and synthesis, and report writing;
• Conducted statistical analysis using SPSS, UNIX, ACCESS, and SQL; and
• Made presentations at local and national academic conferences
Major Research:
·
Effectiveness of Course Elements: The Value of Using
[?] of Technology in Education. This research was
especially stimulating. Consistent with my belief that using technology in
teaching can improve students’ understanding of the subject, we found that
students who elected to do more electronic homework significantly improved their
scores on the assessment instruments relative to their performance on these
instruments before using CyberTutor. This research is particularly important
because it suggests that efforts to improve instruction should concentrate on
improving instructional formats.
·
Electronic homework As Part of the Performance
Assessment Algorithm. Electronic homework that combines
assessment and tutoring as a performance assessment instrument is both reliable
and valid. This study presented several assessment algorithms with a maximum
reliability of 99.9 %. It showed that an electronic homework tutor has about an
order of magnitude less variance per unit time than paper-testing assessments
(i.e. a 3-hour final exam and 12 weekly tests together). In addition, its high
validity allows using CyberTutor for predicting subsequent exam results.
·
Relationship Between Conceptual Learning and
Quantitative Learning. Physics education research shows that
conceptual understanding is not necessary for students to do well on
standard quantitative problems in introductory physics. This study addressed a
related question: is conceptual understanding sufficient or helpful
for students to do well in quantitative problems? Our results showed little
inductive influence upon the quantitative from doing the conceptual first, but
suggested that working on the quantitative problem first helps students with the
subsequent conceptual one.
·
A Correlation Analysis of the Students’ Response
Variables from Online Tutoring System. We examined the
correlation of 12 background variables determined from a student survey with
assessment instruments including paper-testing instruments (e.g. final exam and
weekly tests) and an electronic assessment from the results of a Web-based
homework tutorial. On this basis we suggested that the use of un-timed Web-based
tutorials can make an important contribution to assess student performance,
without bias due to students’ background differences.

Liberty Partnership/Long Island Urban League (2005)Conduct qualitative observation of the Liberty Partnership/Long Island Urban League after school academic intervention services, career development and counseling services. I visited Central Islip High School and Middle School to conduct this study. At the high school, eleven students participated in the focus group. From the program staff, one teacher and the program coordinator who taught math skills were interviewed. At the middle school, fourteen students participated in the focus group. Three faculty members were interviewed (two instructors conducting group lesson; and one working individually with students on a computer for SAT preparation and career counseling were interviewed.) The principal of the Middle School joined the after-school session and participated in the individual interviews. After the consulting a series of workshops was suggested. I conducted one workshop and additional ones are planned. C.3. The Long Island Regional School Support Center Evaluation (2006-2007)Evaluation done by Dowling College and the Eastern Suffolk BOCES’ Office of Research and Planning distilled concepts from extensive analysis of the online survey data and are now scheduling district site visits to confirm and expand upon their qualitative research findings. As part of the evaluation team, I met with the staff as a whole and then individually. A complete assessment document was presented. C.4. Bridgehampton School District (2007-2008) Consulting activity. I created a program call “The tech series” to motivate teachers in Bridgehampton School District effectively uses of technology in their classroom. That program included a weekly newsletter prepared by me, in which I provided information about instructional technology to the Bridgehampton community. I also provide private tutoring advice to teachers and administrators as part of “The tech series”. I also prepared a course to fits their needs “Weaving the web into teaching and learning” that focused on the effective uses of the internet, creating webquests, and their classroom web-pages.C.5. IV. RESEARCH, SCHOLARSHIP, AND CREATIVE WORKS/ACTIVITIES A. Patent & CopyrightsCase MIT Case 9637 Computer Implemented Tutoring System. Filled on December 19, 2002. Serial 10/325,800 Elsa-Sofia Morote’s Contribution: Computer Algorithm for evaluating students’ performance. http://www.freepatentsonline.com/y2004/0018479.html United States Patent 20040018479 Abstract: A computer-implemented system, which is applicable to a variety of specific knowledge domains, conducts an interactive dialog with a student. The dialog helps the student arrive at a correct solution to a problem, for example by presenting problems in multiple parts, providing hints or simpler subparts to the student when requested or appropriate, and responding usefully to the student’s wrong answers. The system interprets the nature of a student’s errors to adapt the interaction to that student. For example, the system can select questions based on a detailed assessment of the student’s knowledge. The questions can have a variety of types of answers, including freeform answer types, for example symbolic expressions. The system can include authoring tools to let teachers write problems, displays detailed information on how students interact with these problems, and allows teachers to address frequently given incorrect responses. The system can provide a skill rating of each student on a preselected list of topics, each of which might be an element of knowledge for example declarative, conceptual, or procedural knowledge. This book, merges geopolitical scholarship with military history to present a futuristic scenario involving China and the United States engaged in armed conflict. The authors see a repeat of the unsuccessful plan employed by the Germans during WWII to isolate the U.S. from its southern neighbors in a campaign that originated in South America. China stands a better chance of being successful using this plan than Germany because this time Peru, Bolivia, and Paraguay are already in their way to be disarmed. However, war is not the end of the story. We present a philosophy of social harmony to avoid the final conflict. He proposes that the harmonious relationships one observes in nature can be the foundation of human interaction for individuals, communities, and nations. Further, he posits that throughout the universe, all matter and anti-matter—isolated or in combination—that can be created or that fulfills a purpose, consists of parts and/or systems which conform to time and space with each other and maintain equilibrium in the environment in which they develop. As long as the equilibrium is maintained, there is harmony. The absence of equilibrium is the beginning of disorder: war/destruction is its end. And even when disorder exists, the force of nature seeks an eventual return to harmony. Book Chapters: Morote, E.S. (2013). Leadership and Technology Implementation. Nvivo - Qualitative Research Analysis (Q R international, 2008) 3. “Advanced Statistical Analysis Using SPSS” (February 10-14, 2005) Course received in the SPSS’s headquarters. The course included Discriminant analysis, Binary logistic regression , Multinomial logistic regression, Survival Analysis (Kaplan-Meier) , MANOVA: multivariate analysis of variance, Loglinear analysis , Cluster analysis, Factor analysis, and Repeated Measures ANOVA. 4. "Sample Size and Power Determination" (Sep. 23- Oct. 14, 2005). This course shows how to make power and sample size determination for experiments, surveys and long-term trials using Stata and other widely-available computer software. 5. "Structural Equation Modeling" (Oct. 14 - Nov. 11, 2005) Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) is a general statistical modeling technique to establish relationships among variables. A key feature of SEM is that observed variables are understood to represent a small number of “latent constructs” that cannot be directly measured, only inferred from the observed measured variables. 4.
