9811 Theory of Organization II

CONTEXT: Courses in classic, modern, and emergent organizational theories. Analyses of systematic relationships through use of selected theories in understanding and predicting the behavior or groups and participants in various social organizations. Major leadership theories, practices, and philosophies, and their contributions to leadership practice and outcomes are examined and evaluated. Basically: “How Things Work” in contemporary organizations and in real time.

Organization and Expectations

Course content, organization, and emphasis on specific topics will reflect upon the major intent of the course. Class sessions will include lecture, group and collaborative work, and individual student work, in the classroom and elsewhere. Students will make individual presentations, as assigned, to the cohort group during designated sessions, and will be afforded the benefit of group comment, discussion, and suggestions, in addition to oral and written comments from the instructor. Student performance will be assessed on the basis of command of the content, scope and sequence of the presentation, application of appropriate technology, and articulation.

Assessment Rubrics and Grading

Student presentations and products will be based on a rubric scale (Excellent: 24-25; Mastery Competent: 22-23; Proficient Competent: 20-21; Needs Improvement: 19 or less, which will require subsequent submissions or presentations.

 

GOALS: Students Will:

- Develop an understanding of and perceptions of the emergence of various management and leadership theories and practices

- Study and analyze the impact on current leadership and management practices of seminal stages of theory development

- Apply appropriate theoretical and practical concepts to the workplace

- Integrate traditional theory and research with the practical functions of leadership and management (Planning, Organizing, Actuating, Controlling), but with special emphasis on the assimilation and understanding of the theory: Profound Knowledge

- Prepare discussion documents or relevant research in the field of their general research interest and posted in a podcast style

- Commence the compiling of data and material for later cumulative assessment and the e-Portfolio

Chapter Presentation (25%)

Student will create a 15 minutes podcast or video cast discussion for each leader. They will interview two leaders from a list of leaders volunteers provided by the professor (click here for the list):

Leaders Volunteers

This will be based on the class notes, life experiences and other materials /research articles read by your group and you. Podcast should have links to support some of the statements made in the discussion. The podcast will be available for the public on doctor morote page.

Score

Exemplary Score Range (92+): Describes and compares a variety of assessment approaches and evaluation models. Explains how and by whom they were developed; understands the theoretical foundations of professional practice, and demonstrates knowledge of application to professional practice. Reads and interprets the literature of professional theory and practice; reflects on his/her professional practice and its effects.

Proficient Score Range (85-91): Knows and can discuss various approaches and models of evaluation. Uses a variety of formal and informal assessments to evaluate his/her performance and the performance of others. Maintains a sage and effective work environment.

Marginal Score Range (75-84): Can discuss theoretical models and approaches in superficial terms. Has basic knowledge and displays the beliefs, values, and behaviors that guide professional practice.

Unacceptable Score Range (Below 75): Has little understanding of theoretical models and approaches.

Chapter Presentations - Chapter presentations should not be more than an hour. 20-30 min Presentation - be specific, and 20-30 min Class Activity. please include a discussion on how you relate this chapter with Art of War or The Princessa. You should have some interactive activity / test u other way to enhance learning. That activity should be included in the hour assigned.

Pocasts - The same teams organized for the chapters will interview two or three leaders (from the list), leaders can not be interviewed twice. So as soon you see the list please let me know which leaders have you choose, selection will be first come first serve basis.

You will prepare your interview questions in advance based on your chapter presentation and in two major questions to the leaders:

- how they have connected their dissertation with their real life and professional life - yes, you have to be familiar with their dissertation

- What advice they can give novice leaders in _____ your chapter topic.-- for example if your chapter was decision making, then this part should be focus in that area....

professional podcast or video casts to be presented in the last day of classes. Teams will be responsible to make appointments with the leaders, tape the info, and edit it. Teams also will provide insigns in the discussion and relate the discussion with class materials and two books read it: The Princessa and The Art of War, and prepare a PowerPoint to analyze the podcast in the light of those authors as well as the book "10 mistakes that smart people make", video paradigms and any other material discussed in class.

What I should do to be prepare for this class?

1. Read entirely the Art of War and the Princessa

2. Prepare your chapter presentation.

3. Connect with your leaders and set up a day/hour appointment to make the interview. Although the interview is 15 min, you will need to set up a 30-45 minutes with the person to assure the quality of the interview, and edit it later.

Chapter Presentations

20-30 Explaining your understanding of the Chapter – Do not do book repetition, but explain your understanding, and how you can applied that knowledge to your job, give examples

20 min  include a discussion on how you relate this chapter with Art of War or La Princessa. What you will Sun Zu and La Princessa will advise you in this topic, how you will use this information in your case.

20 min You should have some interactive activity / test u other way to enhance learning. That activity should be included in the hour assigned.

PODCASTS
