Educational Software Evaluation
This course covers the selection and evaluation of computer-based educational materials (magnetic disks, CD-ROM discs, videodiscs, opensources) used in authentic learning activities.
Prerequisite: EDU 5611.


Information for the student:
This course will focus on the process of selecting, evaluating and correlating software titles to the New York Learning Standards. Software will be evaluated and applied in light of its ability to act as an instructional strategy addressing key ideas of each of the standards.

A Student will be able to:
  1. Identify important facility considerations for the placement of technology in an elementary or secondary classroom. (1.1, 3.2, 4.2)
  2. Demonstrate the process of installation and set-up of educational software on a computer. (1.1, 2.4, 4.2)
  3. Describe the process of "student proofing" a computer. (3.1, 3.4, 4.2)
  4. Demonstrate the use of a software evaluation form to determine a piece of software is suitable for classroom use. (1.1, 5.1, 5.3)
  5. Explain the importance of software documentation. ( 1.1, 3.2, 3.3)
  6. Describe the impact of user, instructional and geographical software attributes on its classroom usefulness. (1.1, 1.4, 2.0, 2.2, 3.1)
  7. Evaluate software to determine its usefulness as an instructional strategy to address key ideas of specific NYS Learning Standards. (1.1, 1.3, 2.0, 5.1)
  8. Demonstrate the process of correlating software attributes to learning NYS standard key ideas. (2.0, 3.2, 3.3, 5.1)
  9. Classify software as to its operational modality, design, presentation and appropriate setting. (1.1, 1.4, 2.0, 2.2, 3.1)
  10. Describe the use of instructional software in a thematic unit. (1.1, 3.1, 3.3)
  11. Explain the role of instructional and tool software as a means of instructional support. (2.1, 2.3, 2.4, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3)


(Numeric designations are correlations to Standards for the accreditation of programs in Educational Communications and Instructional Technology (ECIT)

  1. Nine (9) software evaluations using standard evaluation forms
  2. Three (3) software evaluations and learning standard correlation of software currently not identified in the software correlation’s document (ron weber's collection).
  3. Completion of Class Activities and Authoring projects
  4. Class presentation / demonstration of a software package used to address the learning standards.
  5. A comprehensive final exam


Grading Criteria

A+ Exemplary graduate work, worthy of sharing with a wider audience
A Very good graduate work with insight and well-justified conclusions
A- Very good graduate work with some minor areas for improvement
B+ Satisfactory graduate work with one or two important weaknesses identified
B Satisfactory graduate work with a few major weaknesses identified
B- Barely meets the criteria sufficient for graduate quality
C Major shortcomings in quality of work
F Unacceptable
